Jamie is the owner of Sunrise Cyclery and the biggest supporter of Grease Rag Ride & Wrench.  (Understatement of the century:  Jamie donates everything from space to photocopies, staff, tools, time, expertise... the list is endless.  No Jamie= No Grease Rag.)  He is not only our sponsor- he is a really amazing friend and ally to all of us!

Jamie has had some recent health trouble that landed him in the hospital. The man with the biggest heart winds up having heart failure... Luckily he did not sustain permanent damage and he's going to pull through.

Jamie needs our support right now.

Let's come together, pool our resources, and give something back.

Bicycle Crashes, the MN Legal System, and You

Sunrise Cyclery at Bryant/ Lake St. 7PM, FREE

Facilitators:  Robin Landy and Mike Fargione

Robin is a senior partner in a law firm that handles injury claims, and has been doing this work for more than 20 years.  Before law school, she was a social worker at Sister Kenny working with brain injured people.  She has been on the Board of the Brain Injury Association and currently serves on the Board of Jewish  Family Children's Services.  Mike Fargione did personal injury work for 25 years but is now a director of litigation with Minneapolis Legal Aid.

How the legal system works if you're in an accident:

  1. What should be reported and to whom
  2. If you need medical treatment, some unexpected sources of medical insurance
  3. Figuring out issues of fault - rules of road for bikes, Minnesota No-Fault Act (you can get up to $20,000 in medical coverage)
  4. Take care of yourself first- don't ride your bike without inspecting your body, and your bike

Come and join us!  Learn about your rights and responsibilities as a cyclist, and how the legal system works.  RSVP here, on Facebook.

Vehicular Cycling

Sunrise Cyclery at Bryant/ Lake St. 7PM

Facilitated by Nickel

Nickel was certified as a Licensed Cycling Instructor (LCI # 2167) by the League of American Bicyclists in 2008 and hopes to encourage more women to become LCIs and year-round commuters.

Want to feel more comfortable in traffic? Uncertain about intersection positioning?

Come learn about traffic law and where to ride on the road, as well as negotiating bike lanes and Multi-User Paths (MUPs).  This is a great opportunity to take advantage of an LCI's knowledge and training for an hour and a half for the low, low cost of FREE.

In this skill-share we will cover:

  • Review of MN 169.222 and application
  • Principles of Traffic Law
    • First Come, First Served
    • Knowing Your Place in Traffic
    • Turning Left
    • Lane Changing/Intersection Positioning
  • Riding Safely
  • Be Predictable
  • Be Alert
  • Be Visible
  • Be Assertive
  • Be Courteous

Keep in mind the most important principle of BikeEd:

Cyclists Fare Best When They Act and Are Treated as Drivers of Vehicles

Fixing a flat

Via: http://www.flickr.com/photos/bike/ / CC SA 3.0

Roadside Repair

We will be covering some mechanical skills, what tools to carry, and helpful tips on how to keep rolling after you've had a mechanical issue.

Facilitated by Kat and Lowrah

1.  Give Yourself a Break- There is nothing wrong with using your bus pass or phoning a friend to bail you out when things go less than perfectly.  We will talk about some non-mechanical options for getting home.

2.  Tools to Carry- You don't need specialized tools to fix most problems.  We will show you the minimum you should carry, and talk about how to use these tools.

3.  Fixing Flats- Learn how to assess a flat, discern a possible cause for the flat, patching and booting, and also practice changing a tire!  We will also share some tips for avoiding flats.

4.  Chains-  Put your chain back on if it falls off, and use a chain tool if you have a bent or broken link.

News and Schedule for Grease Rag

by

on August 17, 2009   comments 1

Upcoming schedule for Grease Rag Events:

Thursday, August 20th @ 7pm

Thursday, September 3rd @ 7pm (Only if someone volunteers to organize it. I will be out of town!)

Thursday, September 17th @ 7pm

Thursday, October 1st @ 7pm

I am about to leave for my adventures, however, Jamie has volunteered to continue sponsoring Grease Rag for those of you who would like to keep it going. Some of you have expressed interest in the website, others in the ride, and Jamie says he is more than happy to do the teaching part of it. It would be great if we could keep this going! What we need is a group or even an individual willing to take on the organizing. If we could get posts and writing from several people online and have one person in charge of the Ride/Event then it would be pretty amazing! Organizing the Ride and Wrench night is about as difficult as letting Jamie know which night it is and showing up to lead a ride and get people's information when they come. And I know there are plenty of bloggers out there who like to write for fun!

Grease Rag Night is Thursday, July 23rd!

by

on July 21, 2009   comments 0

Our next event is in 2 days!

Thursday the 23rd we will meet at Sunrise at 7pm, take a short ride and at 7:45pm get down to fixing some bikes. There was great turn-out last time and we all had fun, so I'm looking forward to the next one.

Since Jamie is out of town, biking across Iowa with the older generation, we will not be able to have a movie after 9pm unless I get a volunteer. The next best thing is to have mojitos (I'll bring the mint and rum!) at someone's place and have a discussion forum (which will then be posted on greaseragmpls.wordpress.com). Any takers?

Men are absolutely invited to discussion- they probably have many interesting things to contribute andthings to learn about, too!

Grease Rag Ride

by

on June 29, 2009   comments 1

Event for July 7, 2009!

Do you have questions about how your bike works? More importantly, have questions as to why it doesn't? Want to fix your own bike in a supportive and social environment with other women?

Where: Sunrise Cyclery, 901 W. Lake St.

When: July 7th @ 7pm

Come out for a short ride at 7pm and then from 8-9:30pm we will work on our own bikes, courtesy of Sunrise! Erin and Cali will be there to answer your questions and help you fix those problems that just aren't fixing themselves. This is not a standard curriculum for beginning mechanics- we want to fix the things that you need fixed NOW so riding your bike is safer and more fun!

Everyone is welcome at dusk for an after dark movie in the parking lot behind the shop-  Invite your friends, fellow bikers, and anyone who loves bikes to come see "Quicksilver", the penultimate 80's movie about NY messengers!

Keep your eyes open for our flyers posted on http://mplsbikelove.com and around town for this and future events.
