Grease Rag has a great collection of buttons designed by local artists. Our mission is to support and uplift FTWs, and we like to commission FTWs to show off their talents and create buttons for us.

These "bike camping" designs are going to be gifts to our campers at Grease Rag Group Camp 2017, and were designed by Theresa Ptak. They donated their time and talents, and we are so grateful!

Gratitude to Cori Lin for designing our latest Grease Rag Open Shop flyers!

Grease_Rag_Open_Shop_Flyers-02.jpg

Cori is an illustrator and designer based in the Twin Cities, with lots of experience working with small community organizations.

Tell us about yourself!

I am a bi-cultural asian-american artist. I work in the social sector, the creative sphere, and the overlap between those spaces.  Whether I’m illustrating, designing, or coordinating non-profit programs, my focus is to bring POC and marginalized narratives to the center. I'm motivated by food, cultural ties, community and the intersections between.

Why do you want to create art for Grease Rag?

My artistic work is guided by the same social justice principles that guide my social sector work.  I want to use my creative skills to platform and celebrate the voices of those marginalized or discredited by society.  Working with Grease Rag would allow me to contribute to a necessary and healing community space.

Thank you so much, Cori! The flyers look spectacular. I love the representations of our community, and the cozy feel of the space you depicted. And I particularly love the illustration of the person with crocs. =]

Grease Rag Group Camp 2017

Grease Rag is all about community. Gathering together is a sacred act of power and love. And gathering together, outside under the Perseid meteor shower? What could be more special?

Grease Rag Group Camp August 12-13, 2017

Deadline to register: August 8

Every year we host multiple bike camping trips. We try to do a lot, so you have to worry very little. We want our trips to be accessible to as many FTWs as possible! Inspired by this year's successful Beginner's trip, and the BIPOC Beginners trip, we wanted to host an FTW-only group camping retreat!

So what does that mean?

Low barriers!

Don't want to/can't bike? We have a vehicle to get you to the camp site. Don't want to/can't pay $20? It is a sliding scale of $0-$20 fee, with the cost of the trip being about $8 a person. You choose what you want to pay! Don't feel confident about your ability? You can do this! Our route is mostly flat, mostly on trails, at a casual pace, and we will have mechanical support on the ride. Don't have all the gear you need? We will hook you up with borrowed gear! Our community is mighty, and will provide us with everything we need.

Fun!

We will have a few ice breakers and casual get to know you activities before and after the ride. There will be games at camp, and nothing is more fun than being in the company of Grease Rag Friends! We will be taking care of the main meal and route planning and transporting gear so you all can focus on FUN!

Safer spaces!

We will have a quiet area of camp, designated people to help deescalate conflict, a safer spaces policy, and name tags with pronouns if people choose to share them. Any concerns or ideas on how we could make this a safer space? Hit us up!

Friendship!

Our goal for this trip is all of the things above, and to get to know each other better. We have space for 30 people on this trip. Not saying that I guarantee you'll meet a bff or anything... but the chances are good that you'll meet some rad FTWs you click with. Let's all be open to the experience of meeting new friends!

New Volunteer and Facilitator Training

by

on July 14, 2017   comments 0

Grease Rag is a collective group of FTWs, and we organize and make decisions in our Google Group. Any FTW with some connection to Grease Rag is able to join, but we got feedback that it can be intimidating to "step up" if you're new.

In response to that, Open Shop facilitators and all around awesome folks Casey W and Anne S put together a training for new members and facilitators! They did a tremendous job, and their effort was matched by the enthusiasm of Shruthi, Emily D, Cyndi, Elizabeth, Joy, Ali, and Lucy.  It is our intention to hold at least two of these "trainings" a year.

Training in new volunteers and facilitators

At the beginning of the evening, we went around and shared our names, pronouns, and asked people, "What kind of things have you done with Grease Rag?"

We discovered that we all have different experiences with Grease Rag. As a social rider, volunteering at events, space facilitators, skill share leaders, trip leader, ride leader, bike camping, bike mechanics. And that is the very BEST thing about Grease Rag! Our perspectives and differences.

Our goals for the evening were to get to know each other, give people some tools and confidence to lead events, facilitate open shops, and to become designated safety folks.

We asked people to consider the following...

Why are you interested in facilitating/volunteering with GR?
What do you want to contribute to GR?
What do you want to take away from this training?
How can we help each other?
How do you want to grow?

BIPOC Bike Camping Trip

by

on June 29, 2017   comments 16

Nothing is more fun than heart like taking a casual roll out of the city together with some of my most favorite people. This trip was for BIPOC (Black/Indigenous/People of Color and people with an "it's complicated relationship to their race") FTW (femme/trans/women) only. Two people were bike camping for the first time! It was magic.

Everyone took a part in organizing this trip! Ali booked the space and got us hooked up with a route, firewood, and water. We got some SAG (support and gear vehicle) support from our partners. Dinner Crew rocked those burritos and quesadillas! Everyone brought games and love and hilarious stories about our "worst camping experience ever."

The ride was great, the spot was beautiful. Just when I though my heart could not be anymore full, the sky misted us with a light rain and a double rainbow shined over us. We were camping over Pride Weekend, and all agreed we felt seen by colorful sky.
