Liberation Bike School- University of Wisconsin, Milwaukee
A UWM graduate student has opened a feminist bike shop. This interview with the owner, Katie Curl, was short but really on point. The "feminist bike school" is defined by the atmosphere created by "a lot of female mechanics who are involved with it, and I try to keep conversations critical. I try to deconstruct traditional gender roles." Her Master's thesis is about collective women's movements and community education and has started this volunteer-run experiment as part of that thesis.
"The biggest challenge has been to specifically define it as a feminist space because I feel like it is something that is hard to make really tangible. It's a cultural movement that is more abstract."
I hope that they are doing well and thriving! I was happy to hear they have a women- and transgender-only shop night. Has anyone been in the space that would like to report in?
Oh hey, Liberation Bike School has a tumblr!
