May Day Pedal Power- Volunteer and get involved!

By : Lowrah · March 23, 2012

After a few meetings, Grease Rag's involvement in the Heart of the Beast Theatre's May Day Festival, which will be on May 6th this year, is starting to take shape. We still need help planning and building our idea, in addition to needing volunteers the day of the Festival.

After the Parade, the public will be invited to explore and enjoy the Festival at Powderhorn Park. A new feature will be a "Transition Town" set up around the baseball fields. Wikipedia: Transition Towns is a grassroots network of communities that are working to build resilience in response to peak oil, climate destruction, and economic instability. The (yet to be named!) Town will focus on Energy, Food Justice, and Transportation. Carmen, volunteering with HOTB, asked Grease Rag and other "alternative transportation" groups if we would like to be involved in the Town.

Grease Rag is going to have an all WTF-staffed "Community Bike Shop" in the town! And we need your help.  Look below for our Transportation-related volunteer needs.  Contact me if you have questions or are interested in helping out.

May Day Volunteer Opportunities

Volunteer with Heart of the Beast for the May Day Parade!

The artists' teams from Heart of the Beast want to extend an invitation to all volunteers to take part in the Parade as well.  In addition to doing things within the Transition Town (soon to be renamed), the Parade people can ALWAYS use extra hands the day of the Parade or at workshops ahead of time!

Community Bike Shop

We won't be providing mechanical services, but we will be giving demonstrations of how to patch a tube, and how to adjust your brakes, and how to clean your bike, and...? We need two people from 2-4PM, and two people from 4-6PM. Don't feel like you have to know how to do a mechanical demonstration to volunteer! Visitors will be getting a "passport" stamped, so we will need volunteers to stamp, as well as to help out with another activity that would not require mechanical skills. If you would like to do a mechanical demonstration, AWESOME! We can even teach you everything you need to know and set you up with props.  We also want to represent the Bike Shop in the Parade...

Puppet Build Training and Build Dates for Transition Town Team

When: Monday, April 9, 6pm
Where: In the Heart of the Beast Puppet and Mask Theatre
What: Paul Robinson, Company Manager for HOBT, will be training our team and volunteers on how to build the puppets. We will be building on this day actual puppets and other items that we will use to build our "Town" and to be used in part of the parade: For the Transportation Group, that could mean building a false front for
our Community Bike Shop and Map, creating street signs, and signs for the Nice Ride slow races and Metro Transit bike rack.  Also, we can and will be helping out on all the general artistic awesomeness for the Off the Grid section:  entrance archway, commitment blocks, etc. Please join us! We will also be building on April Mondays following this (April 9, 16, 23, 30---at HOBT)- Everyone is welcome, bring friends to volunteer!

Nice Ride Bikes

We are recruiting people to ride 5 Nice Ride bikes in the Parade and possibly help out with Slow Races in the Park afterward!
