1. BELLS AND WHISTLES

For our May/ June issue, Momentum is looking for short articles (of 50-200 words) about bicycle news, events and gatherings and bike-related products, oddities, books, films, iPhone apps, music, etc. that are turning heads – or sure to do so soon – in Canada and the United States. Send a brief outline of your story idea and tell us why you think it’s important. We also accept just a lead, contact or link. Thanks!

Send Bells and Whistles items to sarah@momentumplanet.com

2. CITY FEATURE: MINNEAPOLIS, MN (1,000 WORDS TOTAL)

We are looking for a bike travel story (500 words) about riding in Minneapolis, MN. This story should share the experience of riding in the so called City of Lakes. What’s it like to take a spin through the city? Who are some of the people making Minneapolis a better city to ride in? What are the habits of local cyclists? How many cycling sub cultures are there in Minneapolis and what are a few of them up to on a regular basis? What are some of the coolest things to check out when visiting the Mill City, the largest in Minnesota?

The writer of this article should include some information about bike infrastructure in Minneapolis (bike lanes, racks, lockers, shower facilities, boxes, turning signals, paths, etc.), the commuter cycling mode share and the city’s strategy for getting more people on bikes.

Part of this article involves creating a visitors’ guide (500 words). Please include a brief outline of a few bike-friendly places in Minneapolis: restaurants/ cafés, sights to see, great rides, great bike shops, special events, etc., in your pitch.

Deadline for final draft: March 21, 2011

Compensation: TBD

Send your pitch and a sample of your best writing to sarah@momentumplanet.com

3. FOOD/ RECIPE STORY – MINNEAPOLIS RESTAURANT AND CHEF

We’re looking for a story that profiles a local bicycle-friendly restaurant and chef. The 500-word total story should include a brief description of the restaurant and explain the restaurant and chef’s food and cycling philosophy. Of course, the story must include a recipe – preferably one recommended by the chef – with ingredients and preparation instructions.

More compensation is available to individuals who are interested in taking photos of the restaurant, chef and prepared dish, along with writing the story.

Clever Cycles (clevercycles.com) in Portland, OR, is an example of a shop that’s making it easier for everyday people and families to ride in their cities. This 500-700-word story profiles the Clever Cycles company and explains how it fits into the lifestyle cycling movement.
