Overcoming Fear

Girls first Ski Jump

I think the young woman in this video deserves a million high-fives!

I've written a little about fear before, but I'm curious about how you process and deal with your fears.

When you're at the top of a 40' ski jump about to rocket down the slope, what do you say to yourself?  "I got it.  I can do this.  Let's go." Or, "Don't be such a weenie.  Everyone is looking at you.  Don't screw this up!"

I'm always trying to figure out when "I'm scared!  Just go faster!!" is better than, "This is scary... better take it easy."  Things that scare me are unfamiliar roads with heavy traffic, less-than-perfect road surfaces, riding next to or behind someone I don't fully trust, and landing on my top tube.  To name a few.

I'm feeling a little afraid to try new things at the Bad Ass Skills Clinic with Mark, but I will definitely show up and give it a go!

What scares you and how do you cope?

A great post Low. I was never afraid of doing anything. My greatest fear was my mom and dad and my relatives. Never knew what would set them off. They were very unhappy people and didn't like their lot in life. Dad didn't approve of me. " No talent kid" was his opinion. Mom just hated me and ranted for hours at a time how no good I was. The relatives were influenced  by my folks and had a low opinion of me.
I dalt with it by not communicating with them and staying out of the way. To this day I communicate better with complete strangers then with relatives. In fact its been 5 decades since I seen my mom's relatives and I don't see my mom ever.
I enjoyed the utube video Low.

That's horrible to hear, Tina.  It's hard, but sometimes you have to trust in the family you choose, not necessarily the family you were born into.  You sound better off without them.  I'm happy you found the Grease Rag: it's chock-full of supportive and encouraging people!  That's how I defeat my self-defeating attitude.  Find cool people and hang out with them.  And hopefully some of it will rub off on me!
