The "New Woman" and Her Bicycle

The main figure in this image is presented in masculine dress, with a mannish face. I think the rest of the images are poking fun- look at these women getting around independently and using simple machines to be more efficient in various aspects of their lives! How silly!
Is this image still relevant? Are people that incorporate bicycling into their everyday lives still viewed as batty? Does the view that cycling is an activity that makes women masculine still exist? And why is "masculinity" in women seen as a bad thing anyway?
I found the image above in a link from Hark, a Vagrant's latest cartoon which illustrates the attitude of a surly velocipedienne. (The cartoon was inspired by this image. I could not determine the source of the image so I'm not re-posting it.) Do yourself a solid and check out the cartoon. It's great. "AIN'T GIVE A DAMN!"
All of these images remind me of the RIDICULOUS list of "Don'ts" for women riders that we discussed over on the Facebook Group. ...What the heck is "bicycle face"?
