Sunrise Cyclery celebrates their 9th birthday

by

on March 27, 2013   comments 0

The first place I went to when I moved to Minneapolis was Sunrise Cyclery.  One of the very first people I met in the city was Jamie McDonald, the owner.  Sunrise has moved to a new location since then, but I always find myself gravitating toward the shop when I'm just biking around.  It's my home base.  I know I'm not the only one, too.

Sunrise Cyclery was where Grease Rag started, on July 7, 2009.  It took zero convincing to get Jamie to stay open just for us, give us staff and space and tools, and encouraged us to pack the shop with awesome WTFs.  If that doesn't make you feel wanted, I don't know what will.

I'm happy to announce that Sunrise Cyclery will be celebrating their 9th birthday, and they are inviting us to the party!

Monday, April 1, 2013
2pm-10pm

Grand Re-Opening

Sunrise Cyclery has moved to a NEW LOCATION at 2901 Blaisdell Ave.!  Grease Rag Uptown happens at Sunrise Cyclery on the 1st and 3rd Thursdays of the month, from 7-9 PM.

Wednesday, 12/12/12 from 12:12- 9PM

Stop by and celebrate the new shop location.  There will be some foods and beverages, and feel free to bring your own snacks, too.

If you are on the Greenway, exit at the Nicollet ramp, proceed down Nicollet, and turn left onto 29th, after the self-serve car wash on the corner. The shop is on your left, before you hit the next light at Blaisdell.  29th is a one-way for cars, but there is a counter-flow lane for cyclists.

Welcome to your new home, Sunrise!  See you soon!

Sunrise Cyclery is Moving- Work Day!

by

on November 6, 2012   comments 0

After four years at Sunrise Cyclery's 901 W. Lake St. at Bryant Ave. location, the shop is moving to 2901 Blaisdell Ave. S.  But don't fret, Grease Rag's not going far!  The new location is just north of the Greenway, off the Nicollet exit.  Here is a map.

Jamie McDonald of Sunrise Cyclery, a GR co-conspirator and ally, wanted me to let you know that he's looking for help right now.  If you have questions or would like to contact Jamie, call him at the shop in the evenings (612-824-6144), because in the mornings he will be working at the new location.

Help out with your money

Need a gift for a friend or family member?  Need a new bike?  Tune up?  Wander into the shop on the corner of Bryant and Lake and browse what the shop has to offer.  Anything that QBP stocks, Sunrise would be happy to order for you.  If you are able, spend some money at Sunrise, and help support their move.

Help out with your hands

Jamie needs people willing to do dirty work as he is prepping a space that has served as raw storage for 20+ years, to become a bike shop.  The owner of their current building sold the place, and the last few weeks have been spent preparing to move into a 5,000 square foot (!) building.  Jamie has already started tearing out and removing 30 year old drywall off the ceiling and walls.  The owner has a bunch of stuff still in the building, and there is a lot of work to be done.  Jamie is looking for help working on the new shop space daily from 8- 2pm everyday between Tuesday 11/7 and Thursday 11/15.  After 11/15 help will be needed in moving to the new shop.

Thursday, 11/15 will be the last day the old space will be open.  The goal is to open the new location as soon as possible, with a Grand Opening on Saturday, 11/24.

Sunrise Cyclery Work Day

Sunday, November 11, 8am to 2pm

Facebook event

Wear boots and something warm, as there is no heat yet at the new store.  Help needed doing the grunge work of moving stuff out of the way, painting, sweeping, pulling paneling off walls, carpet off the floor, and hanging lights.  No advanced skills are necessary, we just need helping hands.  Come for the whole time, or come for whatever time you can spare!

Although this move could not have happened at a worse time, there some good that will come out of this situation, including a bigger space for Grease Rag in Uptown.  The new spot is not farther from the Greenway than the old location, and it will still be our friendly, neighborhood bike shop.  I can't wait to see the new digs!
